Instructor Development Course
So you’re thinking of taking those first steps onto the professional ladder and need to decide where to go and who to do it with
We are the first PADI Career Development Centre in Dahab, highlighting our success rate above normal IDC Centres. This award is not given out often and it is a show of faith in the quality of our training by PADI. Our support for you is second to none – feel free to compare us as we are confident you will not find such an experienced and successful team in the rest of Egypt! Add on to this that our Course Director has been awarded the top Platinum Status in the new Frequent Trainer Program. Less than 90 Course Directors in the world have this status and very few of them work in a top CDC – two really good reasons to read on and have confidence in us when making this very important decision. Not all IDC’s are the same…….

2008 IDC Fact sheet
As you can imagine becoming an Instructor is the start of another road, and there are many continuing education courses you should consider next. With that in mind, Poseidon has embraced all the recent changes from PADI ahead of time, and on all our new IDC’s.
Here are some of the newer features we have built into the Poseidon IDC:
1. Due to IE’s focusing on testing Instructor Candidates on courses beyond Open Water, we have added an additional day where we focus on Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver skills.
2. We have structured our Prep course to include some of the basic skills within the Advanced and Rescue courses that you may have to perform at the IE, and which you need to be familiar with as an Instructor, but which you may be rusty on. We also revise theory, clear paperwork, and practice skills – it is a true prep course.
3. We have put the EFR Instructor before the IDC ready for this course to be compulsory in 2009.
4. We focus on pocket mask use as this is a testing area within the IE
5. We add extra presentations for as we want you to go to the IE totally confident - whatever you are asked to demonstrate
6. If you are crossing over from another agency or you are an AI already, you may just take the OWSI section. We want to guarantee your success, so we ask you to do the AI as well as the OWSI but you only pay for the OWSI – essentially a free AI course.
7. We offer you the chance to team teach an Open Water and an Advanced course after the IE to allow you to settle in to teaching gently with experienced assistance.
We want you to be a great instructor...
We want you to be a great PADI Instructor, and not just be able to pass an IE. The complete program is conducted in English, and our Course Director is British, and highly experienced and regarded. Our team of Staff Instructors are also trained to extremely high standards ensuring you will always have good advice around you.
A lot of centres will pressure you in the IDC – when run well there is ample time to cover the presentations, allowing you to do your work in preparing your presentations and still relax most nights. In order to be prepared for your IDC you need to make sure that you have completed the tasks in our list of 'next steps' prior to starting the IDC. Some centres feel prep courses are a waste of time; however, there is no course that reviews theory or corrects a skill circuit after you have become a Divemaster - so everyone should understand why the prep course is an essential part of our IDC.
With the IE now including such skills as lift bag use, the prep course is important to cover some of the advanced skills you may not have much experience of to allow you to teach them on an IDC.
We recognise the importance of teamwork and support, and with this in mind we will aim to get the group working together from day one. We’ll always be there to support you in this, and whatever you are doing at whatever time, you’ll always be able to refer to one of the experienced Poseidon team members.
"Founded on professionalism"
The best advert Poseidon has is the word of mouth referrals we receive from all our previous candidates. The centre has been founded on its professionalism and equally as important, its atmosphere. We are not a massive multinational, but a medium sized centre in a very relaxed town that understands that you have a burning ambition to teach diving, but that also you are keen on the lifestyle as well - we will do our utmost to give you an experience you will love. We will also ensure that at least one of us is there all the time during your IE so that we can help you with any logistical issues.
The Learning process
An important part of the IDC is your teaching presentations in the classroom, confined water and open water, and the best learning experience is attained in small groups of about six candidates. This gives everybody enough time for discussion and feedback about progress and you will also profit from the contributions of the other candidates. We prefer to conduct your teaching presentations in small groups per staff.
The Knowledge Development portion of all courses is held in our well equipped classrooms. Each classroom is equipped with TV, VCR, DVD, computer and projector. The Dive centre is located 10 metres from the confined and open water areas – which means we can adapt our schedule at a moments notice. We also have our own snack bar which is complimentary during your course for tea and coffee, a service people tend to use significantly!
Our record speaks for itself...
Finally – we have an outstanding record – and not just in pass rates, just ask anyone who has taken the IDC with us, it will be hard to find anyone who has done a Poseidon IDC that hasn’t loved the experience. Diving is fun, and the training should be also.
Why come to us – Our experience, our success rates, Quality (the first Career Development Centre), our atmosphere – just ask any previous IDC Candidate – that’s all …….
